Book launch party importance of reading
Children’s book author Larry Fickau will celebrate the launch of his children’s book, The Trouble With Johnny … He Can’t Read, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan. 31 at Winchester Book Gallery, 185 N. Loudoun St., Winchester, Va. The illustrator, Norasack Pathammavong, will demonstrate how the drawings for the book came together. Refreshments will be served. In The Trouble With Johnny … He Can’t Read, it takes Johnny years to learn how important it is to know how to read. He struggles with life activities – from getting a job to driving a car. He is sorry he didn’t learn in school. It takes a request from his niece to get Johnny to a class so he can read and not only have more fun in life, but he can also help others.  “As a teacher and educator, I have seen many children struggle with reading,” Fickau said. “When children find reading difficult and ‘boring’, as Johnny does, they give up. Children who are exposed to stories early in life, enjoy reading later on.  They see that reading is not ‘boring’ and that it stirs their imagination. “My book shows children the difficulties they could face if they never learn to read,” he said. “I want to motivate kids to learn to read so they can function in life, and I also want them to understand that reading is essential for their future – as Johnny realizes at the end of the story when he decides to take adult education courses.” Fickau said he believes kids need to realize that reading is the key to knowledge and understanding. “I care passionately about young children’s education,” he said. “I want children to gain self-confidence through competence.  I have motivated young students to believe in themselves and realize that they can learn when they never thought they could.” The book is a new release from Headline Kids, an imprint of Headline Books Inc., in Terra Alta, W.Va., and available from local and online booksellers. The Trouble With Johnny…He Can’t Read by Larry Fickau, illustrated by Norasack Pathammavong, ISBN 978-1882658206, 32 pages, Retail $12.95.
