|The Seventeen Selections + One?
17 + 1???
These are the seventeen candidates that have officially declared themselves as candidates for the Virginia's top three statewide leadership positions. It's clear that all of a sudden the office of Lieutenant Governor, which technically only a part-time position has become an awfully popular job with a total of ten candidates seeking this popular title.
There are a total of eleven candidates that affiliate themselves with the Republican Party, but that number is a bit misleading. The best example of this being Mr. Tareq Salahi, who was at one time interested in seeking the Republican Nomination. Mr. Salahi has now indicated he plans on landing a spot on the ballot as an Independent. His campaign has indeed been circulating petitions around the state, in an effort to gain the 10,000 signatures necessary, with at least 400 coming from each of the eleven congressional districts.
Then there is the "+ One" that I reference in the title, which if you haven't figured out as to who I may be referencing with that phrase must not be following Virginia politics very well or glanced past the name of Bill Bolling. Mr. Bolling is currently Virginia's Lieutenant Governor, who had been waging a hard fought battle against Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli for the GOP Nomination. In late November, Bolling announced that he was suspending his campaign for Governor and ending his fight for the Republican Nomination. I have chosen to include him as a part of this list, because I believe at this point the Lieutenant Governor is leaning towards jumping back in the race as an Independent candidate.
This leaves just five Democrats battling it out for Virginia's top three leadership spots. It may be a less crowded field, but please don't let those numbers fool you, as each of these Democrats are equally formidable candidates.
I can't go without crediting Ron Gunzberger's work, which helped with pulling a chunk of the information about the below candidates a whole lot easier.
You can click on each candidate's name to be forwarded to their campaign's website, where you can learn a lot more about each candidate.
My next post will examine how the candidates stack up in reagards to their social media following of supporters. The results are actually quite interesting.
